Maiden Traffic Safety Campaign in Lithuania

2020 08 12

In the period of August 17 – September 3 sixty two (62) traffic safety stops will be open in various Lithuanian cities and towns. Traffic safety specialists from the Lithuanian Road Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communications (later – the Road Administration) will be there to consult the visitors on various traffic safety issues, such as challenges faced on the streets and ways to avoid them.

During the campaign, road users will be reminded how to behave safely on the street or on the road and to refresh their knowledge of road traffic regulations. A limited amount of traffic safety items will be distributed to those not carrying them.

According to the Acting Director of the Road Administration  Mr Remigijus Lipkevičius, everybody is welcome at traffic safety stops; however, special attention will be paid to pedestrians and bicyclists. As they are the most vulnerable road users, they should take care of their own safety and means ensuring them (reflectors and lighters for pedestrians and helmets, waists etc. for bicyclists).

The event will take place right before the beginning of the school year in Lithuania and will target young road users as well. They will be able to refresh their road safety knowledge and traffic regulations. It is believed that the campaign will be useful for both the young and the old.

The venues of the events will be smaller towns and built-up areas, which used to have less of such campaigns and which had a greater number of road accidents with pedestrians or bicyclists involved. The stations will be located at municipality or local authority headquarters, post offices, shopping centres, etc.

Due to COVID-19 the participants of the campaign are highly recommended to take all necessary precautions and observe regulations issued by the Government of the Lithuanian Republic: to keep safe distance, to avoid pooling, to wear face masks, to approach a specialist one at a time.

The organizer of the first such campaign in the country is the Lithuanian Road Administration, supported and contributed by municipalities, local authorities, communities, local enforcement officers.
