Tunnel under Railway Opened in Plungė

2019 11 29

An official opening ceremony of a tunnel viaduct under a railway level crossing has been held in Plungė. The railway crossing used to divide the city into two parts and to impede local and transit traffic. The construction of a tunnel viaduct will ensure smoother and more convenient movement of transport, will improve traffic safety and will reduce traffic jams.

According to the Director of the Lithuanian Road Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communications Mr Vitalijus Andrejevas, traffic safety is a key priority. Therefore, the project implementation would ensure traffic safety for both: road and railway users.

‘The construction of a tunnel under railway is a special structure in terms of its complexity. It is the first structure with a solid overlay where railway position can be changed on demand and does not require any aditional changes in the overlay. It is one of the largest engineering structures built in the Plungė district municipality’, says Mr Vitalijus Andrejevas.

The project was carried out by companies ‘Latvijas tilti’, ‘Eurovia Lietuva’ and JSC ‘Plungės Lagūna’. The total project value is 6.1 million EUR, which was financed from the Road Maintenance and Development Programme and EU funds.

The Lithuanian Road Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communications has implemented the project in cooperation with the Plungė district municipality and JSC Lithuanian Railways.
