Contract on 112 New Average Speed Cameras Signed

2020 08 13

The Lithuanian Road Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communications (later – the Road Administration) has signed the contract on the installation of 112 average speed cameras on 56 state road sections. The Contract was signed with JSC Fima  for 1.9 million Euros. The installation will be completed in seven months after signing the contract.

“Exceeding the speed limit might cause severe consequences; therefore, together with the Lithuanian Road Police, the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration and municipalities we are introducing traffic safety measures, which would enable to educate drivers  to observe the speed limit and would contribute to reducing the number of road accidents”, says Mr Remigijus Lipkevičius, Acting Director of the Road Administration.

The new cameras will not only measure speed, but will also check the validity of technical inspection and civil liability insurance of vehicles as well as road user charge payment.

Currently, based on previously signed contracts 70 new generation speed cameras and 100 average speed cameras are being installed on 50 state road sections.

The priority list of state road sections to be equipped with instant and  average speed cameras was compiled according to the criteria developed by the Road Administration, the most important being average annual daily traffic and the number of accidents.

In the beginning of the current year 50 average speed cameras were measuring speed on 25 Lithuanian state road sections.
