What is Via Toll?

Via Toll is a new electronic road toll system that will launch on January 1st, 2027. It will be applicable only to M2, M3, N1, N2 and N3 category vehicles and will replace current vignettes.

The system will calculate the toll based on the actual distance travelled on national toll roads (see map). This will ensure a fairer and more proportionate road user charging and long-term sustainable financing of road infrastructure.

Why is Via Toll needed?

The new Via Toll system replaces vignettes, which have been used for more than a decade and had to be purchased by vehicle operators to use national toll roads. A vignette allows road users to pay the toll for a selected period. With the launch of the new electronic road toll system, the toll will be calculated based on the actual distance travelled.

This means that each road user’s contribution will be directly linked to the real usage of the road infrastructure. Such a model ensures a fairer and more proportionate road user charging and will eventually help achieve more sustainable financing for road infrastructure improvement. Collected funds will be allocated to the State Road Fund and used for road repairs, reconstruction, bridge renewals and for implementing safer traffic solutions. It is important to note that the toll applies only to freight vehicles; private non-commercial passenger cars used by residents will not be subject to the toll.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is this a new tax for road users?

No. The road toll is already in effect; only the calculation procedure will change from 1 January 2027

The toll will have to be paid by operators of vehicles of categories M2, M3, N1, N2 and N3 using national toll roads.

The exact toll rates will be calculated by the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration (LTSA). They will be announced in the summer of 2026, following approval by the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Lithuania. The calculation of the toll rate will take into account the weight of the vehicle, its emission class and fuel type.

This toll applies only to transport of categories M2, M3, N1, N2 and N3. Therefore, residents, companies and other organisations using M1 category passenger cars will not be required to pay the toll.

The toll will be calculated automatically based on the actual distance travelled by the vehicle. The toll can be paid after registering in the app or on the self-service portal using e-banking, debit or credit card, or fuel card.

No. All vignettes purchased during 2026 will automatically expire from January 1st, 2027, when the Via Toll system starts operating. Refunds will be available for the unused period of vignettes. The compensation procedure will be announced later.

To start using the Via Toll system, you will need to register on the self-service portal or mobile app. Detailed information for users of the new system will be published on the official Via Toll website, which will launch in the autumn of 2026.

Failure to pay the toll may result in a fine ranging from €700 to €1,000 for drivers, owners or managers of the vehicles, as well as for representatives of legal entities to which the vehicles belong.
