Integration of the first EETS provider into the Via Toll system has begun
In preparation for the launch of the new Via Toll electronic road toll system, another important step has been taken in expanding its partner network – an accreditation agreement has been signed with Toll4Europe, the first European electronic toll service (EETS) provider. Following the signing of the agreement, the process of accrediting the company and integrating its solutions into the Via Toll system will begin.
Toll4Europe, the first EETS provider to be accredited by the Via Toll system, is a German company offering electronic road toll service solutions to the European market, enabling transport operators to use road toll systems in different countries via a single service provider.
Once Toll4Europe’s solutions have been integrated and the planned accreditation procedures have been successfully completed, the partner will be able to provide services to its customers in accordance with the requirements set by Via Toll. There are plans to continue expanding the partner network, enabling other EETS providers to join the system.
“The addition of an EETS partner is an important step towards making the Via Toll system user-friendly for hauliers in both Lithuania and other countries. This integration into Via Toll will provide international transport operators with additional opportunities to choose solutions they are familiar with and a convenient payment method, whilst also making it easier to manage Lithuanian road toll payments. We are ready to begin the accreditation processes for other interested EETS providers soon,” says Martynas Gedaminskas, CEO of Via Lietuva.
EETS partners help to simplify payments for the use of toll roads in different European Union countries. This is particularly relevant for international hauliers operating larger fleets. EETS providers supply their customers with on-board units (OBUs) installed in vehicles, which record the data required to calculate toll amounts, and transfer the tolls collected from their customers to the designated toll collector. By choosing an accredited EETS provider, transport operators no longer need to settle payments directly with the designated toll collector in each country – tolls are collected by the chosen accredited EETS provider.
Via Toll, which will come into operation on 1 January 2027, will replace e-vignettes and will be intended for operators of vehicles in categories M2, M3, N1, N2 and N3 used for the carriage of goods and passengers. Drivers of passenger vehicles in category M1 will not be subject to road tolls.
Road tolls can be paid using the Via Toll app, by purchasing pre-paid journey tickets via the self-service portal, or by using solutions offered by external service providers.
