The integration of Via Toll partners has begun: this will make it easier for carriers to use the new toll system
In preparation for the launch of the “Via Toll” electronic toll collection system, another important step has been taken: the technical requirements for the integration of third-party service providers have been published. Service providers that have joined the system’s partner network will be able to offer freight carriers their usual solutions – paying for travel on toll roads in Lithuania using fuel cards or operating the toll system through local OBU device operators or European Electronic Toll Service (EETS).
“Via Toll, which will go live on January 1, 2027, allows for the integration of solutions commonly used in the transportation sector, such as OBU devices and fuel cards. Their integration will ensure a smoother and more convenient process for paying for the use of toll roads. To ensure that providers of these solutions have enough time to prepare and can offer full-service solutions to their customers – freight and passenger transport operators – we invite them to contact us now and begin preparing for integration,” says Martynas Gedaminskas, CEO of Via Lietuva.
As M. Gedaminskas points out, partner accreditation and the integration of solutions and services involve not only technical programming work but also the submission of documents, obtaining permits, testing, and other administrative procedures; therefore, full preparation may take at least several months.
“The first companies have already begun the accreditation process, but we urge carriers themselves to inquire whether their partners are preparing to adapt their solutions to the Via Toll system and to encourage them to do so. It is important for carriers that, from the very first day the system goes live, their usual solutions will work without a hitch and they won’t have to look for or implement other alternatives,” says M. Gedaminskas.
All key technical documents and requirements for the three partner groups have already been published on the Via Lietuva website:
- OBU (on-board units) providers;
- European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) providers;
- fuel card providers.
In these documents, prospective Via Toll partners can find the procedure for connecting to the system, technical requirements, a description of the testing processes, contract terms, descriptions of data submission procedures, and other requirements.
Via Toll is designed to make toll administration as simple as possible for users – from trip registration to automatic toll calculation and payment.
Therefore, the system is compatible with many telematics solutions used in carriers’ vehicles, such as various OBU devices. It is important that the providers of these solutions or services be accredited by Via Lietuva for integration with the new Via Toll system.
In addition, operators of vehicles in categories M2, M3, N1, N2, and N3 who do not use such solutions will be able to register their routes and pay tolls by downloading the Via Toll app or purchasing prepaid travel tickets. This means that carriers will be able to choose the method that best suits their operations, and in most cases, no additional equipment will need to be installed.
